It uses capacitive moisture measurement as opposed to resistive moisture measurement, i.e. the sensor makes no electrical contact with the soil, thus avoiding electrode corrosion and soil electrolysis.
It has an alarm characteristic via on-board passive buzzer.
When moisture level is low, the sensor increases the alarm sound level.
The sensor can detect when it is day or night by measuring the amount of ambient light and therefore makes no noise in the dark.
